The International Business Studies programme teaches you everything you need to know about doing business with and in foreign countries. About 80% of the programme is taught in English.

In the first year you will build a foundation with various working methods. Once you have achieved the basic business skills necessary to advance, you will get to choose between how you want to continue your education. Your choice will be based on a combination of your ambitions and/or your learning style. You will choose from the following two forms:

BTEC (year 2/3) The emphasis with the British diploma programme is in application and independent research work.
EBBD (year 2/3) The emphasis with the European Business Baccalaureate Diploma is in theory and project-based cooperation.

In the first year, you will be introduced to entrepreneurship. Theory and projects alternate with application based BTEC units in subjects such as marketing, sales, business economics, commercial calculation, international trade, import and export, arithmetic, Dutch, English and a second foreign language. Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial behaviour modules are also taught in the first year. Employers will really appreciate your ability take initiative, innovate and dare to take risks.

Dutch-language programmes (year 2/3)
In addition, if you find the study programme in English too difficult, it is possible to continue your school career in Dutch. You may then start in the second year of the Entrepreneur Retail, Assistant Manager International Trade or Junior Account Manager (not in English) programmes.

Across borders
The International Business Studies programme devotes a great deal of attention to internationalisation. Albeda is affiliated with a network of international schools. Every year, students from Europe come to Rotterdam and of course, our students visit the affiliated schools. Is this fun? Hear from the students themselves in this video.

The International Business Studies programme at Albeda also includes many language and study trips abroad; countries include China, France, Spain, Germany and England. You will also regularly attend international events at the school. Besides English, you will choose a second foreign language; Spanish or German.

Chinese
You also have the unique opportunity to distinguish yourself in the labour market by following a third foreign language; Chinese. You do not have to take an exam for Chinese. For more information read the pdf.

BTEC and EBBD
BTEC is a globally recognized qualification that provides access to educational institutions all over the world. Classes are developed with employers to produce business men and women who demonstrate the high standards of knowledge, practical skills and understanding required for further study and employment.

In BTEC classes you will focus on event management, market research, customer service and international logistics. You will create collaboratively and produce independently in order to prepare for an international career.

The EBBD is an excellence track with a focus on learning and working within the European Union. This excellent programme focuses on European law, HRM, intercultural skills and business skills. You also take exams (Goethe for German and DELE for Spanish) at a higher level in your second modern foreign language. The EBBD diploma has EQF level 5, which gives you access to the University of Applied Sciences or other universities of applied sciences.

Electives
Within the programme you will follow a number of electives. You can choose from the following electives: sustainability, international law, internationalisation, lean and creative, personal profiling, entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial behaviour, preparing for hbo or peer coaching.

Personal coaching
In the IBS programme we put a lot of attention to personal guidance. If you encounter problems during your study programme, you can discuss them during the mentor lessons and in more personal conversations scheduled for this purpose with your mentor or the study career coach. Personal guidance sessions don’t always have to be about problems related to your education, it can also be about problems in your private life.

What can I become with this?

With a degree in International Business Studies, you can work as an employee in an internationally operating company. You will be involved in sales, customer service, logistics, administration or communication. You can also work in the export or marketing department of an internationally operating company. In that case, you will assess opportunities for a foreign market and you will research that market. You can also work as an independent entrepreneur.

If you would like to continue your education instead of going straight into the work force you are not alone! No less than 80% of our students go on to study at a university of applied sciences after completing the International Business Studies programme which prepares you well for higher education by paying a lot of attention to skills required at HBO, such as:

  • planning and working independently
  • researching and processing information
  • reading and learning texts
  • working together
  • analyzing and inquiring
  • making reports
  • presenting
  • reflecting

You can also choose to continue your studies abroad. With the BTEC and / or EBBD diplomas, you have many opportunities to continue your studies at most any of the European universities of applied sciences.

Admission requirements

You can start a middle management course (level 4) if you have one of the following preparatory programmes:

  • diploma VMBO vocational framework learning track, mixed learning track, theoretical learning track or equivalent;
  • diploma MBO level 2 (basic vocational training);
  • diploma MBO level 3 (vocational training);
  • transition certificate from 3 HAVO / VWO to grade 4;
  • any other diploma or certificate that the government has recognised on the basis of a ministerial regulation.

What skills do you need?

As an employee of an international company, you need to be able to hold your own in the international business market. It helps if you can communicate well in English or the language of the country where you work. You should be independent and curious about other cultures and have the necessary social and entrepreneurial skills, are representative and self-confident. You should also be able to take responsibility for balancing different company interests. It is important that you are self-confident and not afraid, after all, you may have to manage on your own in a foreign country.

Furthermore, you must have a commercial and professional attitude and recognize the importance of good customer service. Your professional attitude should be stimulating and motivating when dealing with customers, colleagues and managers, making it a pleasure to work with you.

Training costs

The cost of training depends on your age. The Minister of Education adjusts the tuition fees annually. The amounts below apply for the course year 2020/2021.

Costs sphere younger than 18 years
Are you younger than 18 at the beginning of the course year (1 August)? Then you will not pay any tuition fees.

Cost of a course over 18
Are you 18 years or older at the beginning of the course year (1 August)? Then the tuition fee is € 1202.

Other compulsory costs
For the entire programme, you will pay approximately €335 for books and licenses. If you choose to take the BTEC diploma, you will pay approximately 425 euro for the exams. In addition, the license fees are approximately 20 euros per year.

Voluntary costs
Internationalisation and gaining experience abroad run like a thread through the study programme. We offer language trips, internships abroad and international exchange programmes. Although you may be eligible for Erasmus grants, you must take into account additional costs if you want to participate in these activities. The costs for excursions and language trips vary from 50 euros to 1,000 euros.

Within the study programme, you also follow a number of electives. The costs for the study materials of the electives vary from 35 to 40 euro per elective.

Application procedure

After your registration you will receive an invitation for the intake. You are obliged to participate in this. It is important that you have provided the correct e-mail address and postal address when registering. If you are unable to attend, please cancel. If you wish, you can also indicate a second preference when you register. You are entitled to admission to this programme if you meet the following conditions:

  • you must register no later than 1 May (the 1 April deadline for registration for MBO programmes has been extended to 1 May due to the coronation measures).
  • you meet the statutory admission requirements;
  • you participate in the mandatory intake activity(ies).

Even if you apply after 1 May, your application will be processed as quickly as possible. You will also be invited for an intake. The difference is that you no longer have an automatic right of admission to the course of your choice. Albeda will do its best to place you in the course of your choice. If you cannot be placed there, we will consult with you about another programme that would suit you.

English
After applying for the International Business Studies programme, you will receive an invitation for an information meeting. This will be combined with an English assignment and a motivation test. After this, you will receive an invitation for an intake where you will make a pitch in English. After the intake interview, you will receive study advice. If there are still doubts about you or the programme, you may have to take an extra capacity test, so that we can give you accurate study advice.

Rotterdam-Rijnmond as a training location

Rotterdam-Rijnmond as a training location

The International Business Studies programme works together with Rotterdam-based entrepreneurs in international trade. After all, you do not only learn in the classroom, gaining experience is at least as important. In addition to your internship, you will therefore also work on real assignments for the business world. Think for example of customer satisfaction surveys, market research, updating the website or carrying out administrative tasks. You will also attend workshops and presentations. These include presentations by entrepreneurs in international trade or a job application workshop by Randstad. So you can count on a lot of practical experience!

Albeda College Economics & Entrepreneurship considers the whole of Rotterdam-Rijnmond to be its learning location. Through various apprenticeships spread throughout the region, we carry out assignments for companies and organisations. 

Work placement
A 20-week internship is part of the study programme. There are plenty of opportunities for internships abroad, study trips and international exchanges, including to China. You are responsible for finding an internship company. You can find a list of recognised training companies at stagedocenten.s-bb.nl.

With a degree in International Business Studies, you can go in many directions. Some 80% of our students go on to study at a university of applied sciences. We prepare you for a higher vocational education programme by paying a lot of attention to skills such as:

  • writing business reports
  • presenting
  • reflecting

With an mbo level 4 education, you can continue your studies in a college course such as International Business Studies, International Relations or International Business & Management. But other higher professional education (HBO) programmes and/or English-language HBO programmes may also be an excellent follow-up route for you. Based on the EBBD or BTEC extended diploma, you can also continue your studies in Great Britain or other countries.

MBO - HBO transition programme
Are you considering an economic HBO study after your MBO? Then you can choose for extra guidance in making the transition to HBO: the transition programme MBO-HBO. This is a collaboration between the Rotterdam schools for secondary vocational education and higher vocational education: Zadkine, Albeda, STC Group, Inholland University of Applied Sciences and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The aim of the transition programme is to increase your chances of successfully completing your study at a university of applied sciences. You can do this as early as the end of year 2 of the MBO by taking a development assessment, in year 3 of the MBO by following the elective 'preparation HBO and during your first year in HBO with extra guidance.
